After a record breaking search for a new job, I
thought I would pass on some of the tricks I learned and some of the great websites I
found which made my job search easier. I
found that time was the biggest enemy. If you have a job, there is not enough time to search. And if you are out
of work, the longer you take the more financial damage to your bank account. To all my friends in the same boat, I dedicate
this site and hope this information makes your job search less painful.
Tip 1. Use your time wisely.
Your already checking the Sunday Classifieds. but so is your competition. Let the Web work for you. Sign up with FlipDog.com
and Job Sleuth
. Let their FREE cyber agents search the web and e-mail you new opportunities. Set up a weekly schedule of job search sites to visit. Visit each once a week and not more.
Tip 2. Dont E-mail your resume!
You read that right, do not e-mail your resume. Its easy to send an e-mail and its easier for the HR department on the other end to delete it. The HR Dept is receiving hundred of e-mail resumes a day. Make yours stand out and FAX it. Use WinfaxPro, an old fashion fax machine or one of the email based fax services out there that will fax your resume to any number for free. Check out HotVoice.com
for Free Faxing service.
When that call comes you dont want to miss it! Buy a cheap answering machine or better yet, sign up with ONEBOX for Free voicemail, email and fax -- all in one place!
This way you can check your messages from anywhere and it will cost you nothing. If you are like me I need to cut all my expenses when I was job hunting.
Tip 4. Get Internet Call Waiting.
I had only one phone line so when I was searching the net, I couldnt get any calls. The solution was a Free service from Callwave. A quick free software download that allowed me to get calls and messages, while I was surfing with out the expense of a second phone line.
Tip 5. Get a Phone calling card
Sign up for a Free calling card so you can call back perspective employees and headhunters from anywhere. You can sign up for several free phone cards at 4freephone.com.
Tip 6. Set up a separate e-mail address.
Two reasons for this. The first is if you have done your homework, you should have dozens of e-mails coming in from automatic search agents, headhunters and prospective employees, which you do not want to clog up your primary e-mail address. After you find your new job, all these e-mails will become junk mail and just clog up your email address for months to come. Also you may want to keep your job search e-mails confidential. Either way check out the free email service at Onebox or HotVoice. With these two free services you can set up a free anonymous e-mail address that you can check from any computer.
Tip 7. Have your resume professionally reviewed.
This one is tough and you have to put your ego aside, but have someone , but not a friend or family member critically review your resume. There is also a free resume review service CLICK FREE Resume Service that will review it for you.
Tip 8. Reduce you expenses.
The economy is great and jobs a plentiful but be prepared for a 3 to 6 month search. Cut your expenses now. If you are paying for internet service, sign up with one of the free service providers. You can get FREE ISP service from Excite and cancel your current account. Make your long distance calls using a freephone.com or any of the other free internet phone services.
Tip 9. Follow up, Follow up, Follow up.
If you want that job, go get it. If you dont hear back, by pass the HR Dept and send a letter to the Department Manager or the President of the Company. If you think you have the experience and skill set the Company needs make sure they know it. The worst they can say is no.
Tip 10. Start your own Business or Freelance.
If all else fails Freelance, its easier then you think. Check out Ants.com and Workexchange for short term freelance positions.
